Christmas Bird Count 2014

It was a cold, very cold, dark morning. Two groups of brave kayakers set off from separate launch sites towards a common goal. Count birds!  A counting they did. As the first light showed, then as the temps began to rise, the two groups met for some lunch, note comparing and tall tale telling.

Hundreds of birds were spotted!  Here’s a list of just a few of them:

30 Canada Geese

4 Trumpeter Swans

30 Mallards

8 Buffleheads

1 Hooded Merganser

4 Common Merganser

20 Double-Crested Cormorants

1 Great Blue Heron

4 Bald Eagles

8 Red-Tailed Hawks

1 Wilson's Snipe

12 Western Gulls

12 GlaucousW. X Western Gull hybrids

2 Glaucous-Winged Gulls

1 Belted Kingfisher

2 Northern Flickers (Redish)

60 Crows

12 Black-Capped Chickadees

1 Chestnut-Backed Chickadee

4 Marsh Wrens

6 Ruby-Crowned Kinglets

1 American Robin

212 Starlings

12 Song Sparrows

30 Pine Siskins
